Garage Storage Systems Planning
1 CommentUnless you take control of organizing your garage, it will get out of control before you know what happened! That’s why it’s so important to establish a storage system for your belongings in the garage, otherwise, they will simply become cluttered up by default of not having a place to put them back to, a “home” so to speak. It does take some money and planning to get the job done right – but we can have fun with it, too! In this article, we’ll take a look at some themes common in any garage storage system set-up.
One of the key foundations to storage in the garage is going to be use of garage shelving. You can find specialized cabinets for all sorts of things that companies know you are likely to store in a garage. What this means is there is a solution for just about anything so you can correctly store your items in the garage.
This means looking at wall mounted shelves, ceiling mounted shelves, and the typical, traditional types of shelves that simply stand on their own on the floor. If possible, go for the mounted units as this will free up the space the shelves otherwise would take up if they were on the floor! Wall or ceiling mounted shelves are worth the extra expense if you need more floor space – much cheaper than adding onto the garage, eh?
Kids are not going to find a good spot to put back their toys and bikes unless you give them – and tell them – to use something like a bike or sports rack for their stuff. Bike racks and sports racks are not expensive and provide an easy solution for how to store these items in the garage. It also teaches children to put their toys back into their proper place.
Attaching hooks to the walls of the garage is one of the cheapest yet most efficient way to hang commonly accessed items in the garage, leaving them accessible but also organized and not in the way. A pack of hooks will only cost a few dollars, too! For those looking to save some more money, and use their creative skills at the same time, you could make a bike rack with a few key hook placements on the wall.
The garage doesn’t have to be a mess, but if there’s no storage system in place, then it is probably going to end up that way. If you’re first moving into a place – great, here’s your perfect chance to set up a good storage system. If you’ve been living there for awhile, it’s time to take out the trash and get the situation under control. No matter your situation, it is worth it to take the time and money involved in setting up a great garage storage system.

Great tips Brian. It’s also a great idea to create a zone for each category of garage items — Car Care, Sports Equipment, Power Tools, Garden Tools, etc. Rule of thumb is to create a place for everything and put everything in it’s place”.
